| Geography: | The
narrow fertile coastal strip supports the bulk of the population. Farther south,
in comparitively fertile soil, the Atlas runs east-west. Further south, the sparsely
populated grassland plain of the Chott Plateau extend towards the semiarid Altas
Saharien. The southern part of the country is arid desert and is largely uninhabitated,
consisting of vast sandstone plains and plateaux traversed by valleys and then
the rocky mountains of the Hoggar. |
