Land Area:2,381,741 square kilometres / 919,352 square miles.
Population:31,133,000 (est 1999). Density 13 persons per square kilometre.
Languages:Arabic (official), Berber, French.
Religions: Muslim 75%, Christian 10%.
Capital:Algiers (Al Jazaïr). Population 1,722,000)
Currency:

Dinar, divided into 100 centimes.

Independant:3 July 1962, from France.
Geography:The narrow fertile coastal strip supports the bulk of the population. Farther south, in comparitively fertile soil, the Atlas runs east-west. Further south, the sparsely populated grassland plain of the Chott Plateau extend towards the semiarid Altas Saharien. The southern part of the country is arid desert and is largely uninhabitated, consisting of vast sandstone plains and plateaux traversed by valleys and then the rocky mountains of the Hoggar.
