Political:Angola has a Marxist-Leninist government based on the 1975 Constitution when they became independent from Portugal (later revised) The government has been dominated by Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola-Workers' Party (MPLA). President Jose dos Santos came to power in September 1979. He was re-elected in what many saw as an evenly contested democratic election. The opposition UNITA, under the leadership of Jonas Savimbi, did not accept the result and have until recently continued a guerilla campaign. The death of Savimbi in 2002 and a subsequent cease-fire may improve the situation although even under the new leadership UNITA have indicated that they will continue to fight unless the government proposes a truce. Santos is both Chief of State and head of Government and has pledged to hold national elections in 2006.
Geography:The Planalto Central (elevation 1100 to 1400m) occupies nearly two thirds of the country, rising northwards within the central massif of the Bié Plateau to 2620m at Serro Môco. North and east of the central massif the land slopes gradually towards the Congo and Zambezi river basins. The southwestern coastal desert strip extends as far north as Benguela, semidesert conditions continues north to Luanda. Forest and woodland cover approx 30% of the country, mainly in the northwest. Cabinda, the northernmost district, is divided from the rest of the country by the estuary of the River Congo and Congo(Zaire) territory.
