Political:The former French Cameroon and part of British Cameroon merged in 1961 to form today's Cameroon. Cameroon has generally enjoyed stability, which has permitted the development of agriculture, roads, and railways, as well as a petroleum industry. Despite movement toward democratic reform, political power remains firmly in the hands of an ethnic oligarchy. IMF and World bank sponsored 'adjustment reforms' in the late 20th century will further devastate the economy in the 21st, leaving most of the population with the usual burden of outragous debt.
Geography: Topographically divisible into four regions, the southernmost area of equatorial forest, coastal plain and plateau that extends northwards from the southern frontier to the Sanaga River transversing the country east to south-west. North of the Sanaga, deciduous and evergreen forest rises in the east towards the sparsely populated Adamaoua Massif beyond which the Bénoué (Benue in Nigeria) drains westwards into the Niger Basin. North of the Bénoué, semi-arid savannah slopes towards Lake Chad and the lower Chad border.
