Geography: The Gambia river is the country's dominant feature. In the east, narrow valleys are separated by flattish hills, in the west, mainly flat plains. The unusual shape and size of the Gambia is attributable to compromises arising from Anglo-French rivalry in the 19th century, the eastern borders said to be defined by the distance a cannonball could be fired from the Gambia river.
