Land Area: total: 438,317 square kilometres
Population: 30,399,500 ( 2011 estimate.)
Languages: Arabic (official), Kurdish (official in Kurdish regions), Turkoman (a Turkish dialect), Neo-Aramaic Assyrian, Armenian
Religions: Traditional 40%, Arab 40%, Kurdish 15%, Turkoman and others 5%
Capital: Baghdad. Population 5.7 million.
Currency: iraqi dinar, (divided into 1000 fils -now obsolete).
Independant: Iraq gained independence from Britain in 1932. In 1958, the monarchy was overthrown and the Republic of Iraq was created.
Geography: Two major rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates, runs through the center of Iraq, flowing from northwest to southeast. These provide Iraq with agriculturally capable land and contrasts with the steppe and desert landscape that covers most of Western Asia.
Flag: The flag of Iraq consists of the three equal horizontal red, white, and black bands of the Arab Liberation Flag. The flag has been in use since 1963, with several changes to the green symbols in the central white band, the most recent version bearing the Takbir rendered in green. Following the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq in 2003, there has been considerable debate about the design of the flag.
