Heligoland-Zanzibar treaty between Germany and England saw German claims to Zanzibar,
Uganda, Witu and the Kenya and Somali coast withdrawn -in exchange for the island
of Heligoland (a small island in the North Sea), and the area of South West Africa
(Namibia) with access to the Zambezi river via the 'Caprivi Strip'.
Massai
continue to be alienated from their land, outbreaks of rinderpest and pleuro-pneumonia
decimate their cattle herds that by 1890 had been reduced to 20% of the 1850s
numbers. |
