Official Name :

AL-JUMHOURIYA AL-LUBNANIYA (Republic of Lebanon)

Land Area: 10,400 square kilometres / 4,014 square miles.
Population: 3,826,000 (est 2005). Density 382.4 persons per square kilometre.
Languages: Arabic and French (both official), English, Amenian.
Religions: Muslim 75%, Christian 25%.
Capital: Beirut (Bayrut). Population 2,500,000
Currency: Lebanese lira (pound), divided into 100 piastres.

Independant:

January 1 1944, (nominally) from France.

Geography:

The land rises from the narrow coastal plain eastwards to form the Mt Lebanon Range, that stretches to over 30% of the area of Lebanon. Between the eastern slopes of this principle range and the Anti Lebanon, lies the fertile Beqaa Valley (in fact a plateau of average elevation of 1000m). 21% of the land is arable, a futher 8% is forested.
