Traversing the country north-south, the Great Rift Valley contains Lake Malawi and the Shire River Valley that drains southeast from the lake. The largely infertile central plateau rises in the north to 2600 metres in the Viphya Mountains. To the south, the widely cultivated Shire Highlands reach the highest elevation in the Mulange Massif. |
