Official Name :

REPUBLIC OF MALAWI

Land Area: 118,480 square kilometres, (plus water area 24,000 square kilometres).
Population: 12,159,000 (est July 2005). Density, 103 persons per square kilometres.
Languages: English (official), Chichewa (national), Chilomwe, Chiyao.
Religions: Christian 70%, Muslim 20%, Traditional 10%.
Capital: Lilongwe. Population 190,000
Currency: Kwacha, divided into 100 tambala.
Independant: 6 July 1964, from United Kingdom.
Geography: Traversing the country north-south, the Great Rift Valley contains Lake Malawi and the Shire River Valley that drains southeast from the lake. The largely infertile central plateau rises in the north to 2600 metres in the Viphya Mountains. To the south, the widely cultivated Shire Highlands reach the highest elevation in the Mulange Massif.
