AL-MAMLAKA AL-MAGHREBIA (Kingdom of Morocco)

Land Area: 446,550 square kilometres / 172,368 square miles.
Population: 32,726,000 (est 2005). Density, 73.4 persons per square kilometre.
Languages: Arabic (official), Berber dialects including Rif, Tamazight and Shlub groups, French, Spanish.
Religions: Sunni Muslim 98%, Christian 1%.
Capital: Rabat. Population 1,386,000
Currency: dirham, divided into 100 centimes.
Independant: 1956, from France.
Geography: Morocco's terrain is upland plateau or mountain range. Half of the total is semiarid plateau comprising the east Moroccan, Rabat Coastal, and the Saharan high plains. The Atlas mountain system dominates the high relief from the Rif along the Mediterranean, to the Haut (High) and the Anti Atlas in the south. The fertile northeast, northwest, and the High Atlas Plateau provide most of Morocco's cultivated land.
