Official Name :

RÉPUBLICA DE MOÇAMBIQUE (Republic of Mozambique)

Land Area: 799,400 square kilometres / 308,568 square miles.
Population: 19,607,000 (est July 2005). Density 24.5 persons per square kilometre.
Languages: Portuguese (official), Swahili, Bantu languages.
Religions: Traditional 60%, Christian 30%, Muslim 10%.
Capital: Maputo. Population 1,330,000.
Currency: Metical, divided into 100 centavos.
Geography: The Zambezi River bisects the country flowing southeast and empties into the Mozambique Channel south of Chinde. South of the Zambezi, the terrain is predominently semiarid lowland savannah with a coastal belt characterised by mangrove swamps and sandy beaches. North of the fertile Zambezi Delta, the coastal plain is narrower, backed by a rugged interior savannah plateau abutting the tropical vegetation of the northwest highlands.
