Geography:Niger's predominently arid landscape is dominated by the Manguéni Plateau in the north (dividing the Algerian Hoggar and the Tibesti mountains in Chad), and the Massif de Air in the centre. Sand or thin sandy soil covers much of the north, west and central Niger, but to the southwest around the Niger river basin and around Lake Chad, soils are relatively fertile.
