The constitutional union creating the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth
was effected in 1569 by the Union of Lublin, which united the Kingdom
of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania
.
This commonwealth was the largest and most populous nation in
Europe, with land as far as the Black Sea and military power enough
to challenge the Teutonic Knights for control of the southeastern
Baltic coast.
