Official Name : JAMHURIYADDA DIMUGRADIGA SOMALIYA (The Somali Democratic Republic)

Population: 9.925 million (2011 estimate)
Languages: Somali (official), Arabic, English (in North), Italian (in South).
Religions: Sunni Muslim 99%.
Capital: Mogadishu (Mugdiisho). Population 740,000)
Currency: Somali shilling, divided into 100 centesimi.
Independant: Starting in the early 1960s, trends began to emerge when the north started to reject referendums that had won a majority of votes.
Geography: To the north, the semiarid Guban coastal plain is backed by a mountainous belt stretching from the easternmost tip of the horn to the northwestern tip of the Ethiopian border. To the south, the arid coastal plain rises inland to the Haud Plateau and the flat land of the deep south. Between the Jubba and the Shabelle rivers, the soils are fertile with a considerable area of pasture.
