Official Name :

AL-JUMHURIYA AL-ARABYA AS-SURIYAH (Syrian Arab Republic)

Land Area: 185,180 square kilometres (including 1295 square kilometres Israeli occupied).
Population: 18,449,000 (est July 2005). Includes approx 20,000 Israeli squatters in the Golan Heights.
Languages: Arabic (official), Kurdish, Amenian, Aramic, Cicassian, French, English.
Religions: Sunni Muslin 74%, other Muslim sects 15%, Christian 10%.
Capital: Damascus (Dimashq). Population 2,900,000
Currency: Syrian pound, divided into 100 piastres.
Independant: 1946, from France.
Geography: The fertile western coastal strip is well watered, intensly cultivated and densely inhabited. Eastward are the Alawite and ash-Sharqi mountain ranges divided by the Orontes river, and beyond this lies the eastern reaches of the Syrian Desert. 27% of the land is arable, and 3% is forested.
