Religions: Sunni Muslin 74%, other Muslim sects 15%, Christian 10%.
Capital:Damascus (Dimashq). Population 2,900,000
Currency:Syrian pound, divided into 100 piastres.
Independant:1946, from France.
Geography:The fertile western coastal strip is well watered, intensly cultivated and densely inhabited. Eastward are the Alawite and ash-Sharqi mountain ranges divided by the Orontes river, and beyond this lies the eastern reaches of the Syrian Desert. 27% of the land is arable, and 3% is forested.
