Army strongman Gnassingbe Eyadema was installed as ruler by the French in 1967. With all the appearences of democracy, Togo is a brutal dictatorship. In February 2005, Eyadema dies and his son is promoted to the top
spot. Any countries that have noticed are outraged as this smack of a coup. |

The densely populated coastal area is backed by a series of low lying plains. Granite tablelands typifies the far northwestern region. The country's length reaches through six distinct geographical regions, with the
climate varying from tropical to savanna. Deforestation and water polution are major environmental problems. |
